Those lovable, multi-cultural legends at SBS have today launched their SBS Movies OnDemand catalogue with four hundred films available to stream for free! Yup, free. So, let's all take a collective moment to breath deeply and be thankful.
The public broadcaster has long been in danger of funding cuts, despite election promises swearing the contrary. Nevertheless, they've continued doing their thing and in 2011 launched an ad-supported online streaming service for a wide variety of multi-cultural programs, and some films. Earlier this year, they also held the "Festival of 100 Clicks", a similar, though only month-long selection of 100 films that fit into varied categories.
This time around, 400 selected films from dozens of countries in as many languages, various lengths, and across every style and genre are available. You can go from Noboru Iguchi's Robo-Geisha to Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now Redux, Park Chan-wook's Oldboy to Monty Python's Life of Brian with a look at Paris je t'aime, and almost anything in between. Languages range from Faris and Finish, to Samoan and Spanish, and many more. The service will run, with ad support and breaks, for at least the next 12 months, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And is available on almost any device that can stream.
As annoying as it may be, this is the kind of opportunity to support and send a message to local distributors that these services and their diversity are necessary for the survival and competitiveness of artistic and entertainment content, so turn off your AdBlockers, lads and ladies.
SBS Movies On Demand can be found here and enjoyed here.
Now, if you'll excuse me, Big Man Japan isn't going to watch itself....
